Midnight Sun Runes

Description

So called because the blue is sparkly like the night sky, but the gold is more like the Sun.

Have had the runestones themselves completed for about a year. They go pretty quick. The bags and boxes, on the other hand, are so freakishly time-consuming. This one here I think I spent maximum two hours to make the runes, and at least twenty-five hours on the box. Possibly more. The real answer is probably "way too goddamn long," or "don't you have better things do do with your time?"

The stones are the usual blobs of coloured glass with porcelain paint filling the engraved lines. The box is Cernit (blue) and Fimo (gold) polymer clay over cardboard and tape, with ball pins at each bottom corner as little 'feet'.

I cut the box panels out of a piece of scrap cardboard I had lying around, glued the pieces together, covered it in several layers of tape and then a few coats of paint so the clay would stick. When that was done, I covered it in layers of clay and spent TEN FRIGGING HOURS :stare: placing all those little crumbs of glass one at a time into the clay. Probably should have gone with thicker layers of clay on the sides so the glass would have been completely embedded like the stuff on the lid is (I made the lid last, so I learned -- sort of -- from my earlier miscalculations), but there was already almost three packs' worth of clay on the thing and I didn't want to mess around adding more.

So yeah, whack it hard enough against someone and this box could totally cut a bitch. :stab: A bit of care must be exercised when handling it. Not appropriate for small children or irresponsible adults.

The inside is lined with white crushed velvet over 5mm thick craft foam for padding. Underside of the lid has velvet over 2mm craft foam with a square of 5mm in the centre that recesses into the box to hold the lid in place. It doesn't fit tightly enough that the box can be picked up by the lid, but is tight enough that the whole thing can be turned upside down without it opening.

Outside measures 9.5cm x 9.5cm x 8cm (width x length x height, including the feet). Inside measures approximately 6.2cm x 6.2 cm x 5cm. The squishiness of the foam means it can be larger.
(That's ~3.75" x 3.75" x 3" and 2.4" x 2.4" x 2" for you non-metric-using weirdos.)

Time Spent: I don't even want to know. :iconstareshakeplz:

Tools & Materials
Runestones - Decorative blue glass stones, black marker, Dremel, medium round diamond burr, abrasive soap, gold porcelain paint, dental pick, baking sheet, oven.
Box - cardboard, steel ruler, black pen, rotary cutter, scissors, red marker, masking tape, superglue, some other kind of strong glue, white paint, various paintbrushes, sparkly blue polymer clay (Cernit), metallic gold polymer clay (Fimo), goldtone ball pins, gold-mirrored glass crumbs, tweezers, hand-vac to clean up all the little bits of glass I inevitably dropped onto the floor, baking sheet, baking paper, oven, big chunk of thick-walled steel tube to use as a weight to keep the lid flat (which ended up failing at its job anyway), various paintbrushes, clear-coat varnish, dental picks, 2mm and 5mm craft foam, white crushed velvet.
