Ice Runes

Description

So, a set of rune stones. Specifically the Elder Futhark. Because I wanted to give glass engraving a go and decided this was a good way to begin instead of my usual approach of throwing myself headlong into the most complicated project possible.

Glass dust gets everywhere. When I was done, it looked like I'd been snorting crack off my workbench or something.

At first glance it may look like the runes are merely painted on, but they are actually cut into the stones. The lines were then filled in with porcelain paint and the stones baked to fuse it to the glass. It's a nice metallic pearly sort of colour. Called them Ice runes, but they could also be 'Winter' or even 'Water'.

The bag is made of blue leather and lined with white velvet and is just big enough to hold all the runes. It fastens with two snaps, as you can see in the photos, and can be hung around the neck by the cord or carried as-is or whatever.

Some closeups of the stones can be seen at [link] or [link]

Time spent: No idea.

Tools & Materials: Decorative glass rocks, thermoplastic, boiling water, Dremel w/flex-shaft, engraving tips, metallic white Porcelain Painter marker, baking tray, oven, scraps of blue leather, white velvet, black thread, Singer sewing machine, various needles for hand-sewing, holepunchy thing, four rivets, two snap fasteners, blue rattail cord, two end crimps, two jump-rings, six headpins, assorted pliers, six blue beads and eight white beads, superglue.
